The Bandit Clan DLC adds around 50 new quests specific to this charismatic new faction, along with a thematically-appropriate follower that gives risk-taking players a second chance when taking up arms against their competition. The Usurpers DLC in particular has heroes which are brimming with devilish personality, along with playstyles that revolve around more than the just original victory avenues of skirmishing and keeping a death grip on the King’s coffers. Luckily, the champion pool increase is more than just a numbers game. Every character has a distinct story, strong background, and impeccable design, making it easy to have favourites and view others as anti-heroes or perennial villains. Armello takes a leaf out of the book of stories like The Animals of Farthing Wood, in that it’s all about anthropomorphic animals weaving the same complex structures and conflicts that human society does. Though the game is a digital board game, and therefore the environment is fairly static, the characters that the development team continue to create and then release as DLC are a wildly entertaining bunch.
